What is depression? How am I getting influenced by it? What is causing it? How do I cope with it? these are the questions consistently running in the minds of every teenager, adult and every elderly in todays era and generational period due to multiple stress causing factors. Depression has been a rising topic of attention for many years now, impacting millions of individuals Globally

Depression occurs due to a complex combination of:

  • Social factors (unemployment)
  • Psychological factors (traumatic life experiences)
  • Biological factors (complex genetic disorders/disabilities)

This, in turn, lead to greater stress and dysfunction and worsen the affected person’s quality of life.

When we look at the statistical analysis of many recent studies it is reported that the prevalence of depression Globally was found to be:

  • From 2001 to 2020 = 34%. (Rise in overall Self-reported depressive symptoms) 
  • Between 2001 and 2010 = 24%  (rise among adolescents) 
  • & between 2011 and 2020 =  37% (rise among adolescents)
  • Highest level of depression = In Middle Eastern, Africans and Asians
  • Male to female ratio: Female > Male

Other studies also suggest estimated prevalence in a population to be:

  • Women to Men adult depression %age = 6% and 5% respectively
  • Adults older than 60 years = 5.7%
  • Pregnant women/ just gave birth = >10%
  • Depression leading to suicide (4th leading cause of death) in 15-29yrs  = >70,000 

Modern Challenges: "The Daily Juggle"

For the year 2024, the emergence of new challenges is mostly associated with rise in technology usage and its advancements, depression has become an even more difficult and compelling problem. However, with modern management plans, there are ways to cope with it especially for the youth struggling with over exposure as they generally do not know how to create a balance. 

No 1: The Trials of Social Media

One of the greatest causes of depression in youth especially in 2024 is social media. Social media has become a necessary part of our lives with millions of individuals using it on a daily basis. While social media can be a great tool for communication and social interaction, it can also be a source of stress and anxiety. The continuous comparison to others, the fear of being left out, and the pressure to place a perfect image of oneself can all lead to depression.


Fortunately, there are modern technical solutions for technical issues in order to help manage social media and reduce its negative effects. 

  • Apps that limit the amount of time you spend on social media, or that filter out negative content. 
  • Therapists and mental health professionals are incorporating social media into their treatment plans, helping patients to navigate the complex emotional landscape of social media. 

No 2: Economical Crisis and Depression

Another major modern problem that causes depression is the gig economy. With the emergence of freelance work and short-lived contracts, many people are wrestling with job insecurity and financial uncertainty causing feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and despair along with anxiety and stress. 


Modern solutions can help to alleviate some of these issues.

  • There are platforms that help freelancers find work and manage their finances. 
  • There are also online communities and support groups which provide psychotherapy in the form of group counselling for those struggling with financial stress.

In conclusion, depression in 2024 is a serious and alarming problem that demands modern solutions. With the help of technical advances we can also treat  mental health issues in a productive way by managing social media, by finding jobs, and to by creating an online positive community which could create awareness for those struggling with depression to find relief.
